| What
the Client Said
You all made
what potentially could have been a nightmare into a relatively painless
project.
Particularly,
I wanted to thank everyone at Courier that handled all the logistics
and coordination with the various pubs and USATODAY and red-flagged
issues which could have been disastrous.
The final
product was superb and extremely well received by all who have seen
the various pubs.
I hope to
get to work again with this great team.”

XM Satellite Radio

The Client
XM Satellite Radio Inc., an emerging force in broadcasting, transmits
radio directly from satellites. It provides over 120 separate channels
of digital sound to subscribers throughout the continental United States.
XM Radio is one of only two companies with a license to provide this new
national audio service.
The Need
XM Radio planned a marketing campaign using over 14 million inserts in
nine different magazines – Rolling Stone, Motor Trend, Popular Mechanics,
Entertainment Weekly, Stuff, Esquire, Sound & Vision, Business 2.0,
and Fortune – along with USA Today.
XM Radio needed someone
to produce the insert and send the insert to the 10 publications. Each
publication had different specifications, including lap sizes, head and
foot trims, and perfect bound versus saddle stitched. Price, as always,
was an issue and Courier figured out how to run the piece 10 different
ways in a single run.
We used the slitter
knives on the web to trim down each publication size to the exact measurement.
We printed off the edge of the sheet so there would be no cutting offline,
only folding. The publications couldn’t take our long – short
4-pagers so we had to find a way around it. Since then we have installed
new rotary trimmers to eliminate even more additional work.
The Solution
Charlie Baugh, Courier’s Director of Customer Relations and Production
Development, figured out how to use our equipment to produce this job
in one run on four different role sizes, resulting in 10 different pieces
with different specifications.
